Chapter 20

Dexter could hear Sara’s musical laugh in the distance, and he didn’t know what to feel. He pressed his back harder against the tree trunk and rested his forearms on his bent knees while he pulled apart a slick, obsidian leaf between his fingers.

Sara Mar King. The naïve girl who made horrible decisions. Who trusted people she shouldn’t. But, the older Sara proved to be resourceful, confident, and strong. She didn’t need him if she didn’t want him. Yet, she kept him around.

The two came into view, that guy’s skinny arm draped around Sara’s shoulder. On her face was a smile so wide that her nose scrunched and her cheeks flushed. The scene sent a wave of jealousy down his nerves, but he had promised to work on his temper. Plus, whatever they were chatting about was making her happy. He didn’t want any meddling or overreaction ruining that. This was her journey. Not his.

Dexter stood, hoping his presence would be acknowledged.

Sara’s green eyes locked onto him and she smiled wider, the kind that made it all the way to her eyes.

Nell dropped his hand from around Sara and shoved them in his pockets once he saw Dexter. Sara skipped over to him, and Dexter was fast to bring her possessively into his arms.

“I have to talk to you,” she articulated, enunciating every syllable and excitement coloring her high-pitched tone.

An open hand came into view. One with a circular scar etched into the palm. “Hey, I’m Nell.”

Dexter shook it with caution, keeping one arm wrapped around Sara. “Dexter.”

“I’ll let you two talk.” Nell strolled away and sat on the ground, eyeing them.

He turned to Sara. “What’s going on?”

“So, Nell is just like me. He’s one of the four who made the deal with the voice. And, he has more powers than just the freezing one. He has some kinetic powers. He moved an entire tree and can manipulate fire. He said he got them from the others doing this deal. He wants his last power from me, which means I’ll get my first power from him. Do you think I should do it?”

Dexter lifted his brows. “You’re asking me?”

Jade eyes sparkled for him. The hazel ring around her pupil lightened as a sunbeam streamed through them. “Well, yeah. We’re a team now, right?”

He looked over to Nell who was flicking a flame on and off by snapping his fingers. “How do you get the power?”

“He said we have to hold hands and light up together.”

“That’s it?”

She shrugged. “That’s what he said. What do you think?”

Dexter’s initial reaction was hell no. He didn’t trust the guy. Then again, he wouldn’t trust any guy. There wasn’t going to be a way for him to separate his feelings from the situation. “What do you want to do?”

She scrunched her nose. “I kind of want to.”

Dexter sighed and held her in his arms. “Then you should. I’ll be here if anything happens.”

She squealed, tore herself from his embrace, and jogged to Nell.

He couldn’t hear the conversation they were having, but he also didn’t want to.
